What actually happens at a first chiropractic appointment
Most of a first appointment is not adjusting. It is working out what is wrong.

People put off a first chiropractic appointment for longer than almost any other kind, and usually for the same two reasons. They are not sure what will happen, and they have heard something dramatic from someone.
So here is the honest version of a first visit, in plain terms.
You talk first, and for longer than you expect
A first appointment starts with a conversation, and it is not a formality. What hurts, how long it has been going on, what makes it worse, what makes it better, what you have already tried, and what you need to be able to do again.
That last one matters more than it sounds. Getting back to sleeping through the night, back to a shift on your feet, or back to a season of a sport are different goals, and they change what a sensible plan looks like.
Patients at Aascend mention this part repeatedly in their reviews. The most common thing people say about Dr. Ben is that he listens and is thorough, and about Dr. Landra that she remembers what you told her last time. That is not a bedside manner nicety. History is diagnostic information.
Then you get examined, before anything is adjusted
Nothing is adjusted on the strength of a description alone. An examination looks at how you move, which segments are not moving, where the tenderness actually is, and whether nerve involvement is in the picture.
This is where a lot of first appointments produce a surprise, because the sore spot is often not the source. A shoulder that will not settle can be coming from the neck. A knee that aches on stairs can be a hip that stopped rotating months ago. Treating the place that hurts, in those cases, is treating a symptom.
What an adjustment is, and what the noise is
An adjustment is a specific, controlled movement applied to a joint that has stopped moving properly. It is quick, and it is aimed at one segment rather than applied generally.
The popping sound is gas releasing from the fluid in the joint as pressure changes. It is the same thing that happens when a knuckle cracks. It is not bone, it is not anything tearing, and the sound is not the point. Some good adjustments are silent.
If you are nervous, say so. There are lower force ways to do most of this, and a patient braced rigid against the table is genuinely harder to treat than one who has been told what is coming.
You may not be adjusted at all
This surprises people. If the examination suggests the problem is a compressed disc, an inflamed tendon or a trigger point, then adjusting is not the first move, and a practice with other options will use them.
At Aascend that could mean spinal decompression on the traction table, laser or Tecar therapy for inflammation, dry needling or cupping for soft tissue, or rehab. All of it is in the same building on North Westhill Boulevard, which is why the plan can be the right one rather than the available one.
Practical things worth knowing
- You do not need a referral. Call the office on (920) 574-3622 and book directly.
- Wear something you can move in. Nothing restrictive at the waist or shoulders.
- Arrive a few minutes early for a first visit so the paperwork is done at the desk rather than eating your appointment.
- Bring what you know about any current treatment elsewhere for the same problem, so it can be worked around rather than duplicated.
- Expect to leave with something to do at home. Prevention and self care are part of the plan here rather than an afterthought.
Afterwards
Mild soreness on the first day or two is common and normal, in the way it is after a hard session rather than after an injury. Many people feel looser immediately. Both are ordinary.
What you should get, at the end of a first appointment, is a straight answer about what is going on and what the plan is. If you have been putting it off, call Aascend Chiropractic on (920) 574-3622. Every age from newborns to seniors is seen here, and the first visit is mostly a conversation.
